YOUR DIETITIAN
The Travelling Dietitian

Vanessa McNamara graduated with a Masters in Nutrition & Dietetics from The University of Sydney in 2000.

Since then, she has been fortunate enough to combine her love of life, food and travel with a varied 20-year career as a dietitian. She has lived and worked in rural South Australia, throughout the United Kingdom, in the exciting Indian cities of Bangalore and Mumbai and now resides in the foodie metropolis, Singapore.

Vanessa now specialises in paediatric nutrition but also enjoys working with adults. She has a special interest in helping families to achieve a healthy lifestyle without sacrificing their enjoyment of food. Having her own children, including a fussy eater, has helped her to understand there are many challenges associated with feeding children but she believes that encouraging a positive relationship with food from a young age will prepare them for a healthy future.

WHAT IS A DIETITIAN?

Dietitians are the only qualified health professionals that can assess, diagnose and treat diet and nutrition-related problems.

They translate scientific nutrition information into understandable, practical advice about food, allowing people to make the right decision about what to eat.

What’s the difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist?

According to Dietitians Australia, the difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist is that in addition to gaining qualifications in human nutrition, dietitians have the expertise to provide individual dietary counselling, medical nutrition therapy, group dietary therapy and food service management having completed a course of study that includes substantial theory and supervised and assessed professional practice in these areas.

All dietitians can consider themselves as nutritionists but nutritionists without a dietetics qualification cannot take on the specialised role of a dietitian.

WHY SEE A DIETITIAN?

A dietitian can assess, diagnose and treat diet and nutrition-related problems.

A dietitian translates scientific nutrition information into understandable, practical advice about food, enabling you to make the right decision about what to eat.

The Travelling Dietitian can provide you with all the tools and information you need to feel confident in making healthy choices that are right for you.

Vanessa believes the benefits of seeing a dietitian include:

  • Accessing a health professional specifically trained in the science of food and nutrition
  • Working with a professional to develop healthy, balanced eating patterns suited to you and your lifestyle
  • Having someone help translate the science into practical ways to modify your eating habits and behaviour and encourage body positivity
